What I Ate in New York – Gluten Free Diary Free

Recently I went to New York for work. I only had time for 2 lunches, 2 dinners and 1 breakfast so I thought it would be great to show you what I ate in New York. My first lunch was in a rush so I just went to one of those convenient store salad bar things they have all over the place. Luckily, since I was there on business my meals were covered. I tried my best to find some quality vegan places around me that were kind of a treat since I wouldn’t spend money on eating out at home normally.

First dinner was on the way home after work drinks so I wanted something quick. I bought a vegetarian chilli from one place and then chickpea fries from another.

They were both pretty yummy, the chilli doesn’t really look like chilli – more like gravy. I got the chilli from Nature Works which is a very small fast food place that has some healthy options at decent prices. The chickpea fries were from Mirage Kitchen which is a middle eastern restaurant. The fries where so soft and yummy, I would love to make these at home. They were especially good dipped in the chilli :). This whole meal was well under $10.

The next morning I had a lunch + snacks. I got a smoothie, oatmeal, fruit and a juice. I need a lot to get me through until lunch. The smoothie I bought from Juice Press and I can’t remember which one it was, I don’t think it’s listed on their website menu but it was so gross. I’ve never in my life disliked a smoothie. I couldn’t even finish this one, what a waste of $10.

The bulk of my breakfast was from the New York staple, Pret Manger. I got the 5 Grain Oatmeal, Pink Grapefruit Juice and a bowl of superfruits. This was my idea breakfast, super simple and delicious. I think this came to $15 (!!!)

Next was lunch which was the best thing I ate while in NYC. Local Thyme, (the restaurant) was only 2 mins away from the office. They had an amazing menu, it took a little bit to figure out what to get. I ended up choosing the burrito bowl with black bean burger as the protein. ‘Xcuse my language but it was f;*ckin amazing! The quinoa was so soft and fluffy, there was just the right amount of cashew cream and picco di gallo…mmmm. It was also massive, definitely a lunch and after work meal. It was about $10 to start (which isn’t bad) but I swapped brown rice for quinoa and added a black bean burger which brought it to $15.50 (USD!!!). Also I bought myself a sweet snack too.

The snack was alright but nothing compared to the burrito bowl!

Alright, next was my second dinner in NYC. I googled ‘smoothie bowl NYC’ to see if I could incorporate my favourite meal into my trip. Juice Generation had good reviews so I thought I should check it out.  I bought the protein bowl and spicy mango roll.

The smoothie bowl was good (not as good as mine) but I still had the best one ever in L.A.

The spicy mango roll was not good. The yellow sauce tube thing wasn’t great and the rolls were kind of gross… not sure why exactly but I only ended up eating 3 of them.

After eating and chilling for a bit I walked over to Duane Read and bought this watermelon juice which was really exciting for me because I’m obsessed with Watermelon. It was also somewhat of a let down.

Overall I was a little disappointed in my food adventures, I had better luck the last time. Anyways, here’s some words of wisdom from Pret Manger:
